HOW TO GET KIDS INVOLVED IN A FAMILY PHOTOSHOOT

Wondering how to get kids involved in a family photoshoot? Discover simple, stress-free tips to keep children happy, engaged, and natural during sessions.

One of the questions I get asked a lot as a family photographer is, "How do you get kids involved in a family photoshoot? Parents often tell me, "My kids won't sit still" or "They won't last long”.

I get it, my own two boys are hard work too when I try to photograph them. Luckily the majority of tricks below usually work a treat on most ages.

Bribe them you say? While treats and rewards can sometimes help, the results are children with forced camera smiles, not the beautiful natural expressions that we love and want to remember.

Here are my top tips for getting kids involved in a family photoshoot without resorting to bribes.

1.BE PATIENT

In my experience children need at least 10 minutes to get comfortable so allow time for a warm-up. At first they can be shy or unsure about a stranger with a camera.

Give them a little time and they soon start to feel more comfortable and get used to me being there so that I can snap away unnoticed. Some forget about me alltogether, which is often when the magic happens.

2. time it well

This is a big one. If possible, avoid scheduling your family photoshoot when children are hungry or tired. Try not to book a session just before nap time or a meal. No matter their age, children are much more likely to enjoy the experience when they're well-fed, well-rested, and full of energy.

3. Get outside

If you book a family photoshoot with me, chances are we’ll be outdoors.

There’s so much to explore and find. I have kids blowing dandelions, collecting pinecones and climbing trees. It allows them to be themselves which is ultimately want we want to see in our family photos.

4. HAVE FUN

Don’t make the photoshoot sound like a chore. Instead, treat it as quality family time.

Do the things you normally enjoy together. See above point about getting outside. Often when we make it all about the photos and looking at the camera kids lose interest.

5. get moving

This works for both adults and children. When we get moving we focus less on the camera and therefore act more natural.

If you haven’t noticed by now, no child ever has to sit still for me to take their photo. My aim is to capture them as they are and I don’t know about your kids but mine rarely sit still. I encourage playing games, running, chasing and tickling!

6. DISTRACT THEM

Most parents have got this down to a fine artl. Get them to focus on something fun and they often forget what was bothering them.

Talk to them about fun upcoming plans (ice creams after the shoot) and for little ones sing their favourite song or bring a cuddly toy. One of my favourite tricks is blowing bubbles (makes for great shots too!).

7. make it familiar

Treat me as a friend rather a stranger. Using my first name rather than “photographer” or “lady with the camera” it removes a barrier. I always introduce myself to children and chat with them about their interests so they start to see me as less of a stranger and just someone who is joining us on a walk.

8. LET THEM HELP ME

Some children are fascinated by cameras and would happily take over the photoshoot themselves!

Yes, I’ve seen it all. If this is your child don’t worry. Little helpers are very welcome and I have a job for everyone. It’s a great way to keep them engaged and excited.

9. MAKE IT CHILD-LED

This is one of my golden rules. Children are far more likely to enjoy a family photoshoot when they're allowed to be themselves. If an 8 year old would rather climb trees than have his picture taken, let them. If a 2 year old prefers to roll around the leaves, no problem.

As long as it’s safe I’m happy to go along with what they feel like doing! Some of the best family photographs happen when children are free to explore, play, and simply be themselves.

If you're wondering how to get kids involved in a family photoshoot, the answer is usually much simpler than you might think. Give them space, keep things fun, and allow them to be themselves.

The most meaningful family photographs aren't created through perfect poses or forced smiles. They're created through genuine connection, laughter, and the little moments that make your family unique.
